Chat

Working in chat

The chat is where most work starts. Ask, attach, mention, and watch the AI work in the side panel.

Logging in lands you in a new chat, and the black New chat button in the sidebar opens another at any time. Chats you were in are listed under Recent in the sidebar, together with the tasks your channels are running, and on the Chats page.

The composer

The composer at the bottom of the chat does more than take text.

  • Attachments. Drop a file anywhere on the page or use the paperclip. Files up to 25 MB each are accepted; recordings up to 200 MB. Images, PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets and plain text are read directly.
  • Mentions. Type @ to bring in an agent, an automation, a skill or a tool. A mentioned automation can be run from the chat. From a meeting's page, Ask agent starts a chat with that meeting attached, and the AI searches its transcript.
  • Model. The selector shows the current model. In Auto mode cmdk picks a model per message. See Models and routing.
  • Voice. Tap the microphone to dictate, hold it to record a voice memo. Voice mode keeps listening and reads the answer back. The language picker follows the workspace default language, or auto-detects when none is set.
  • Shortcuts. Add shortcut saves a message you send often, with a label. Use @ in the message for workflows, tools or skills, and Insert variable for a value you fill in each time.

Press Enter to send and Shift+Enter for a new line.

The side panel

The panel on the right has one slot and three uses.

  • Activity shows what the AI is doing right now: the tools it calls, the files it reads, its reasoning steps, and how long the answer took once it is done. Open it when an answer takes a while.
  • A document or artifact opens here when the AI produces one, so you can read and edit it next to the conversation.
  • Workspace context (or Project context inside a project) holds the files the AI always sees: Instructions and Glossary, plus Escalations inside a project, the Connectors and Tools available in this chat, and the Knowledge tree.

When the AI needs you

Some runs stop and ask a question. The chat then shows an escalation card with the question, the context behind it, and either options to pick from or a text field. Choose Something else to answer in your own words. The run continues as soon as you answer.

Approval cards look similar and appear only when a connected app's approval mode asks for it: Asks before writing stops before every write, Asks first before every call. The default is Writes freely. See Tools.

Status you will see

While a message is in flight the composer tells you where it is: Sending…, Generating response…, Running tools…. If you stop it, the chat shows Response stopped and keeps what was produced so far. An error banner offers a retry.

Files the AI produces

Documents, spreadsheets, images and other deliverables appear in the conversation as file pills. Click one to open it in the side panel, where images, PDFs and Word documents preview in place and every file has a download link.

Projects

A chat can belong to a project. Choose Add to project above the composer before your first message, or open the project and start a chat from there. The chat then runs with the project's instructions, skills and connections on top of the workspace set. See Artifacts and projects.
